Lately I’ve started to think more about what I’m going to do after I leave St. Luke’s in June. It’s a question I get asked almost every day by someone, and people are often surprised when my answer is a resounding, “I don’t know.” I’m fortunate in that throughout my working life God has always revealed what’s next before I even knew I was looking for it. Hopefully that will happen again; I pray regularly asking God to reveal His will to me for my future. I would ask you to pray for that too!

I’ve been thinking about prayers for my future in the context of our theme for this school year “Lord, Teach Us to Pray” based on Philippians 4:6. Psalm 118:5 says, “Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free.” I’ll be honest and say that sometimes when I think about my future, I do get a little distressed and anxious. Uncertainty and the unknown can be exciting, but stressful and emotionally taxing as well. That’s why this verse gives me great comfort. I know that God hears my prayers and sets me free. Free from what, you might ask? From fear and doubt about my future. God’s answer is not a ready-made job dropped in my lap. Instead, it’s the freedom to know that He holds my future in His hands. Regardless of what happens in June, I am a free and forgiven child of God secure in my eternal home with Jesus. As a recent contemporary Christian song says, “Fear is not my future – You are.”
