I’m writing this soon after Hurricane Milton made its way through our state and community as we assess the damage and clean up. That storm was so powerful and scary looking I think all of us at some level had anxiety, concern, or fear about what the hurricane would bring. Despite our preparations we can feel helpless in the face of a huge storm like that. What can we possibly do to prevent the wind and rains from overtaking us?
I’ve been thinking about fears of the hurricane in the context of our theme for this school year “Feel the Power!” based on 2 Timothy 1:7. It can be pretty difficult to feel powerful when faced with the fury of a hurricane like Milton. It seems like the storm has all the power and we don’t have much to counter that. At times like this doubts and fears creep in and faith can falter. That’s when it’s imperative to turn to God’s Word. Isaiah 40:29 says, “He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.” The power and strength referred to here aren’t designed to help us thwart a hurricane. Instead, they build up our faith and embolden and encourage us to face disaster secure in the knowledge that we are in God’s hands. Regardless of the impact of Hurricane Milton, we know that Jesus remains victorious as
our Lord and Savior. He will always provide whatever is needed to see us through.
