Do you remember that friend you had as a kid that you were inseparable with? You went to school together, played outside, went swimming, talked on the phone (you know the one attached to the wall), gossiped about your other friends, rode bikes, and ate dinner and snacks at each other’s houses. Wherever he/she went that’s where you could be found too. That was me and my friend Phil in elementary school. At least it was until his family moved away. I was bereft for weeks after he left town.
I’ve been thinking about inseparable friends in the context of our theme for this new school year “You are not alone…you’re connected!” based on John 16:32b-33. There are very, very few human relationships that last. People move, marriages end, friendships break, those close to us die. Thankfully our connection to our everlasting God is nothing like that. Our theme verses of emphasis for the 1st quarter are Romans 8:38-39: “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Aren’t those amazing words? The connection we have with Jesus is a truly inseparable one and it’s built to last – for eternity.
