If you’re like me and you have a teenage boy in your house, you know one thing they typically
do not lack is confidence. Upcoming AP exam? No problem! Headed on a mountain biking
campout having only ridden a bike once? I’ll be fine. Ask a girl out with a poster and flowers in a
public setting? I got this! It’s amazing how a lack of life experience can lead you to think you can
do anything 🙂

I’ve been thinking about teenage confidence in the context of our theme for this school year
“Lord, Teach Us to Pray” based on Philippians 4:6. Confidence is not necessarily a word we
often associate with being a Christian. Humility, kindness, compassion – those are our kind of
words! But 1 John 5:14 tells us, “This is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask
anything according to his will, he hears us.” Whatever confidence we might lack in ourselves,
we can be confident in our God! He loves us, He hears us, and He provides for us. We can pray
boldly, joyfully, and confidently knowing that the God of the universe will always listen.
