What’s something you do with great zeal? That’s not a word we hear much, right? It means with “great energy or enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause or an objective”. In this time of pandemic when many are stuck at home, people are pursuing hobbies and interests with renewed zeal. Whether it’s puzzles, knitting, yard work, sidewalk chalk, or whatever people are busy! For my daughter it’s baking – we’ve had banana bread, chocolate muffins, brownies, and I think cookies are up next. What about me you ask? Well…when I get home from work, I’m sitting on the couch with great zeal. Does that count?
I’ve been thinking about doing things with zeal in the context of our theme for this school year “Christ-fit for Service” based on 1 Peter 4:10-11. Our theme focus for May is Christ-fit to serve with zeal based on Romans 12:11: “Do not be slothful in zeal, be eager in spirit, serve the Lord.” So how do we serve the Lord with zeal in a time of stay at home orders and social distancing? As I talk to friends and see what they’re doing on social media it’s amazing how people are caring for others with great energy and enthusiasm. While some may be “hunkering down” and turning inward, followers of Christ are shopping and running errands for others, calling or video conferencing with the elderly and those who live alone, praying fervently, celebrating drive by birthday parties, and even sharing toilet paper! God created us to be social creatures and to love and care for others. In this most difficult of times let’s do so with great zeal!
