I recently turned 60 years old, and as I’m learning not everything works like it did when I was
younger. One thing that’s definitely started to plague me is my hearing. I just can’t make out
what people are saying as well as I used to. “What’s that, you want me to take out the cash?
.…Oh, the trash. That makes more sense.”

I’ve been thinking about my eroding hearing in the context of our theme for this school year
“Lord, Teach Us to Pray” based on Philippians 4:6. Thankfully we worship and pray to a God
who is not hard of hearing and never fails to listen. Jeremiah 29:12 says, “Then you will call
upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you.” What a wonderful comfort it is to
know without a doubt that God is always listening – you don’t even have to say “Alexa” first! So
many times in this world it seems like no one hears us – friends, businesses we frequent, even
family tune us out and we can feel alone. But not with God – He wants us to call on him in times
of distress, joy, hopelessness, need, and thankfulness. He is ever present and will always hear
us regardless of circumstance. On the other hand, if you see me around the school, please
speak up so I can hear you 🙂
