Did you know that a gas grill almost ended my marriage before it had barely started? I am not a
handyman or good at fixing things and I’ve never had much luck at assembling or building stuff.
My wife and I received a new gas grill as a wedding present and one afternoon we decided to
take it out of the box and put it together. Let’s just say it did not go well; choice words were
exchanged and I, shall we say, expressed my frustration with the assembly process on multiple
occasions. Fortunately, my wife is both much more patient than I am and in truth better with
tools too. Eventually the gas grill was put together, burgers were cooked, and the marriage
survived.
I’ve been thinking about that memory in the context of the theme for this school year “Feel the
Power!” based on 2 Timothy 1:7. In Jeremiah 32:17 we learn: “Ah, Lord God! It is you who have
made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is
too hard for you.” In life we all encounter obstacles or challenges or roadblocks that are beyond
our powers or abilities. Things can seem way too hard sometimes – because they are! Our
human limitations are evident in many things we attempt to say or do. But thankfully we have a
God who is much bigger than all that! Nothing is beyond the capacity and power of God which
means he can use us as His instrument to accomplish things no one thinks are feasible. Let’s
celebrate God’s power in our lives and all the possibilities that brings.
