Jennifer Nielsen launches her newest book Iceberg at SLLS
On Tuesday, March 7th, students and staff at St. Luke’s helped author Jennifer A. Nielsen launch her newest book, Iceberg, a historical mystery set on the Titanic. Students spent the afternoon participating in a variety of themed learning activities.
They did math and science activities based on the R.M.S.Titanic and events in Iceberg (and learned first-hand just how COLD the water was that night!)
Morse code was a pivotal way for ships to communicate, so students learned how to send and receive coded messages. They discovered how fast these messages can actually be sent and were astounded!
Students also participated in an Escape Room where they learned more about the history and people on board the Titanic. They ran around feverishly, dissecting clues to figure out how to unlock the room.
The afternoon culminated with a launch party. Founders’ Hall was transformed into the H.M.S. Titanic, and students had a little taste of what it would have been like to be a passenger on the “Ship of Dreams,” including what it meant to dine First Class versus Third Class! Jennifer Nielsen then shared some final thoughts about her book and the Titanic. She left the students with three tips: remember who you are, understand that a small decision can have a big impact, and get assistance (a “life boat”) from others when necessary.
