It was about this time last year that I was rudely reminded I’m not a kid anymore. I bent over in the teacher workroom bathroom to pick up something up and BAM! I felt back pain like nothing I’d ever experienced. I couldn’t even walk back to my office and later that day my daughter had
to pick me up and take me home. It was several days until I returned to work. What a humbling
experience as my family had to do pretty much everything for me. Having my wife help me put
on my pants was not my finest moment as a man 🙂
I’ve been thinking about that painful experience in the context of our theme for this school year
“Feel the Power!” based on 2 Timothy 1:7. 2 Corinthians 4:7 tell us, “But we have this treasure
in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.” All the things
of this world – including our very bodies – are fragile and breakable and prone to crumble at
any time. If you’re of a certain age like me, I don’t have to tell you how our bodies can let us
down. But in 2 Corinthians God’s Word tell us that even in our ordinary “jars of clay” God has
placed great treasure and power. When our human frailty is on full display then all the glory
and praise can be attributed to God for anything we accomplish. Even at your most broken you
can feel God’s power in you, and you can accomplish great things in His name. Just don’t bend
down to pick anything up while that’s happening 🙂
