I hope this new school year is off to a great start for you and your children!
I’ve spent time praying for our students and staff as we begin the new year. But often I wonder,
am I praying enough? Shouldn’t I be praying more for our children? When I ask myself that
question, I typically remember the Ethiopian pastor at my church in Jacksonville many years
ago. He would sometimes host prayer vigils that would go on for hours – even over night! I
marveled at his deep commitment to prayer. That’s not me – if I pray for too long in the
evening, I usually fall asleep!
I’ve been thinking about my “prayer stamina” in the context of our theme for this school year
“Lord, Teach Us to Pray” based on Philippians 4:6. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, “Rejoice
always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ
Jesus for you.” I’ve always found the “without ceasing” phrase intimidating. Who can fold their
hands and bow their heads and pray all the time? Particularly when driving! But prayer is more
than that formal approach. Prayer is really an ongoing conversation between me and God that
can occur anywhere or in any circumstance. Think about that when you reflect on your own
prayer life. You can reach out to God while you’re exercising, giving your child a bath, or sitting
at your desk at work. I rejoice and give thanks to God for the opportunity to talk with Him any
time and anywhere.
