My daughter was recently home for a visit at Thanksgiving, and we were looking ahead to her
birthday coming up soon after. She turned 24! I know what you’re thinking – I can’t possibly be
old enough to have a 24-year-old child. Why thank you! I’ve always liked the fact that my first
born came into this world in the season of Advent right before Christmas. Because Advent and
Christmas are all about the wonder and awe and miracle of birth – our Savior Jesus came into
this world as a little human baby.
Now raising children and preparing for Christmas are not always filled with wonder and awe
though, are they? It’s easy to get caught up in the day to day demands and drudgery of cooking,
cleaning, shopping, taking kids to practice or rehearsals, and so much more. Sometimes we
forget the joy and the miracle that is Christmas.
So this Christmas let’s be sure to take a breath and embrace the amazing story of God
descending to this broken planet in the form of the baby Jesus. He was and is the Savior of the
universe who changed history for all time by redeeming us from our sins and opening the gates
of heaven to us all. This year let’s join the angels from Luke 2 in declaring “Glory to God in the
highest, and on earth peace, goodwill among men!” Merry Christmas!
