I’ll let you in on a secret. It’s not uncommon for my colleagues to hear me singing or whistling a tune from Z88.3 while I walk the halls of the office or school. What I lack in skill I make up for in volume 🙂 Why do I do that? I think it’s because I want to be someone who “serves with joy” as opposed to just “doing my job”.
As we enter 2020, I’ve been thinking about that contrast in the context of our theme for this school year “Christ-fit for Service” based on 1 Peter 4:10-11. Our theme focus for January is Christ-fit to serve with gladness based on Psalm 100:2: “Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!” Are you a person of duty or a person of gladness? That might seem like an odd distinction but to me it’s an important one as I look ahead. In 2020 I want to make a commitment to live every day at work and at home as one who serves with the tremendous joy and gladness that comes from serving a loving God. Christian service is not about checking off a to do list or punching a time clock. It’s about caring for others with a smile on my face, joy in my heart, and laughter in my voice. So I plan to keep on singing – next time you see me feel free to join in 😊
