Today is Valentine’s Day and for clueless husband’s like me that means we have to answer the question of how best to express our love for our wives. One year early in our marriage I bought my wife diamond earrings. Yes, a winner! Another year I bought her cake pans. Hey, it’s what she said she wanted! This year we’ll share in the alluring ambience of the middle school dance. Who says romance is dead?

I’ve been thinking about Valentine’s Day and expressions of love in the context of our theme for this school year “Christ-fit for Service” based on 1 Peter 4:10-11. How did Jesus show his love for his friends? When you read John 13 you find the story of Jesus stooping down to wash the feet of his disciples. What an amazing act of service and love for the Lord of all creation to clean the filthy feet of those who followed Him. Afterwards He said, “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.” Well, you may not be ready to wash the feet of your friends, but how you can serve them in ways that show your love? As you celebrate Valentine’s Day focus on how you can express love through humble service to your family and friends. And take my advice – don’t buy the cake pans 🙂
