“Same old song and dance”. Have you heard that phrase before? It’s typically used when we’re describing another mind-numbing part of our routine – the same boring meeting we’ve attended many times, the same pointless pep talk from a supervisor, or just another day at the office. So much of our life doesn’t seem new or exciting – we just grind out the same old song and dance day to day. Of course, having an 8-year-old boy at home at least introduces unique questions like “Dad, what’s an anus?” (True story!)
I’ve been thinking about the “same old song and dance” in the context of our theme for the this school year “New in Christ” based on 2 Corinthians 5:17. Our special sub theme for October is “New in Christ: Sing a new song!” based on Psalm 40:3: “He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.” I love to sing – in the shower, in car line, in my office (sorry Ms. Meis), or pretty much anywhere. And the great thing about being a child of God is that there’s always something joyous to sing about! My life might be filled with a lot of routine and repetition but every day I am new in Christ with a new song in my heart. The Spirit fills me each day with joy through His love and forgiveness. How can I not sing a new song of praise? Like me you are new in Christ so who cares if you can carry a tune or not – live the words of Psalm 9:2: “I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.”
